Build Your Video Marketing Strategy for 2021

How to Build a Video Marketing Strategy

You’re at the point where you’ve decided to create a video advertisement for your brand, but aren’t sure how to go about it. The best place to start is with a plan. A plan is critical when you’re trying to keep a business going. Here at Wahoo Films, we’re all about making sure your business has the best chance possible to survive and thrive.

To begin, let’s break the complicated subject of marketing strategy into a few, more comprehensible topics.

Step #1: What is Your Video Going to do for you?

Having videos to represent your business or product is super cool…but it is also important that you see a return on your investment (ROI). Think about what kind of results you want from your video. Are you looking to attract new customers? If so, how many? Or perhaps you want to make it easier for a customer to learn how to use your product.

Wherever your audience is in their customer journey, you will want to implement a  Sales Funnel system to see which types of video work best in achieving  your goals and reaching your metrics.  If you are considering running an ad, what types of videos and how many videos will you need to convert them to a customer?  Knowing this ahead of time will help guide how many videos you need along the customer journey and see how well they are performing once you release the video ads.  These goals will also help you determine how much you should spend to obtain new clients.

Step #2: Know Your Target Audience

Having videos to represent your business or product is super cool…but it is also important that you see a return on your investment (ROI). Think about what kind of results you want from your video. Are you looking to attract new customers? If so, how many? Or perhaps you want to make it easier for a customer to learn how to use your product.

Step #3: Pick Your Platforms

Plan out where you want to put the video as this will influence how to make the video. Is the viewer watching the video on a phone, a computer, or a television?  On which  social platform will they be watching the video, and what experience do they expect to have on that platform? This will also influence the length of the video, as is expounded upon below.  See all of the platform options in this article about the last 15 years of online video.

Step #4: Write Your Script

Before you shoot, you will want to write a script.  Focus on your target audience and why they need your service or product. We recommend starting with ‘The Why Question’ as mentioned in Simon Sinek’s book Start With Why.  Why do your customers need or want your offering? What is the emotional value you can bring that will make their life better?  Keep focused: stick to the particular piece of the sales funnel that your video is meant to cover.

Next, think about this message as a visual storyline.  Images can say a lot, and we are 55% more likely to remember visuals than something we’ve read. When writing your script, you must be concise while focusing on your message to not waste any time. In other words, follow your video goal and write your script accordingly. Leave your potential customer feeling good about your product or service, and hopefully thinking about looking deeper into it.

If you are hiring a video company, consider leaning on them to write the script for you or with you.

Step #5: Ready, Set, Shoot

Keep your video goal in the forefront, and research how best to get there with your resources. Ask around: find which course of action will be best to take. Many video production agencies, including Wahoo Films, are more than willing to share information with you so that you can make the best choices possible. You may consider which shots you can do yourself with the equipment you have, and which ones you will want to hire out.  Read this article to determine when to DIY your video and when to Hire a Video Company.
